Pre-School Vision Screening Program

This free vision screening program is for the early detection of Amblyopia (a.k.a - Lazy-Eye) in children who are 6 months to 48 months old. The program is an excellent way to alert parents to potential eye problems that can be addressed by an eye care professional.  Click here for complete information on pre-school vision screening.

Scholarships

Each year the Lions Club grants a number of partial college scholarships to graduating seniors from our community. Information about the scholarship program can be obtained by contacting the club or your guidance counselor at Gaithersburg or Damascus High School.

The club happily welcomes back scholarship winners once a year to a club dinner to hear about the accomplishments of these fine young adults.

Medical Equipment Loan Program

The Laytonsville Lion's Club loans out medical equipment to members of the community on a first-come, first-serve basis at no charge. There are no eligibility requirements. Our equipment stock includes electric hospital beds, wheelchairs, walkers (rolling or stationary), chairs on wheels, crutches (many sizes), bedpans, porta-potties, canes and other medical equipment.  The club is pleased to provide this equipment to all residents as a service to the community. If you would like to borrow our medical equipment, please contact us by sending an email to medical@www.laytonsvillelions.org or calling Charles White at 301-258-9173.

Blood Drive

Twice a year the club teams with the Montgomery County Red Cross and sponsors a blood drive. The blood drives are conducted at a local church in Laytonsville. Members of the community are encouraged to participate. We're always looking for additional blood donors.

Next Blood Drive -February 23, 2004 from 3 pm until 7 pm at St Paul's United Methodist Church in Laytonsville.  Those who wish to donate blood can set up an appointment or unscheduled donors may go directly to St. Pauls United Methodist Church, 21720 Laytonsville Road (Rte. 108), Laytonsville, MD. New and past donors can contact Lion Frank Sullivan at (301) 330-2842 to arrange for an appointment. The Red Cross would like to collect 40 pints of blood from our community.

Holiday Baskets

For Thanksgiving and Christmas the Lions Club puts together holiday baskets for families in our area in need of a little extra help with putting on a full holiday meal. If you know of a family in the Laytonsville area that could use our help, drop us an email. We'll see if we can help them out on the next holiday.

Eyeglasses Collection

According to the World Health Organization, one child in four cannot see well enough to read without glasses. By age forty, 90 percent of adults need eyeglasses to read.  The lives of nearly 500 million people worldwide would improve with a simple pair of eyeglasses. Last year, nearly 5.3 million pairs of eyeglasses were collected through the Lions Eyeglass Recycling Program. Regionally, District 22-c, which includes Maryland and Washington DC, collected nearly 65,000 pairs of glasses.

The Lions recycle your used eyeglasses and distribute them to third world countries. You can drop off you used eyeglasses (Frame, Lenses) in our collection box at the Laytonsville Post Office.  Eyeglass collection boxes are also available at the libraries in Montgomery County.

Camp Merrick

Lions Camp Merrick is a project of Lions District 22-C. When started in 1979, it set out to provide Deaf and Hard of Hearing children a summer residential program that was both educational and fun. Over the years the camp expanded it's program and now offers services to blind adults, blind children and diabetic individuals.

District 22-c

The Laytonsville Lions Club is a part of the Lions District 22-c. District 22-c encompasses central Maryland based Lion's clubs. At the district level, the Lion's of Maryland offers additional community services beyond those of the Laystonsville Lions.

Keep up with the Lions!  Four to six times a year the club puts out an email of upcoming community events, community services and fund raisers. If you would like to be included in our Laytonsville Lions Club email distribution list, send an email to subscribe to whats-up@www.laytonsvillelions.org.   To protect you from junk email (a.k.a. SPAM) we won't provide your email address to anyone outside the Lions Club.
